Welcome Builders Club!

We never know what to expect when it’s time for the annual Builders Club Takeover!  Builders Club, the version of Kiwanis for middle school kids, is a youth leadership program we sponsor at Lewis Middle School. Eleven Lewis students took charge of today’s Kiwanis meeting. Their principal, Brad Callahan, stopped in to cheer them on, and Lonnie Folsom from the Tierrasanta Kiwanis Club also joined us.  We were all were impressed with the leadership skills these young students have acquired. Their advisors, teacher Jacinda Dietz and Kiwanians John Crawford and Yuki Ochi, helped the students plan and execute an entertaining morning for everyone involved!

Alissa Robles (8th grade) was the 2017-18 Builders Club President and she presided over the meeting today. VP Julianna Manalo was our song leader and led us in several rousing songs. Christopher Trapp (8th grade) was K.O.D. He collected Happy/Sad Dollars and challenged us to solve some funny riddles and auctioned off two bobble-head figures of Trevor Hoffman.

Following the Builders Club version of our Joke of the Week and announcements, we all enjoyed breakfast and a slideshow of the many community service events the club members participated in this year. They include feeding the homeless, participating in community cleanup events, collecting toiletries for Ronald McDonald House and helping out with Rady’s Miracle Mile of Quarters fundraising event.  Later, we got to hear from each of the students as they shared facts and interesting tidbits about themselves. Many of these students plan on attending Patrick Henry High School next year and are looking forward to continuing their affiliation with Kiwanis by joining our sponsored Key Club. We were surprised and intrigued to learn that 7th grader Brodie Martin’s family is moving to Bulgaria next year and we wish him well as he embarks on this exciting adventure. No matter where life takes these young people, we hope that their spirit of involvement with and giving to their community will stay with them for many years to come!

Our thanks to Builders Club members and advisors for a great meeting!

Lewis principal Brad Callahan told us how proud he is of the Builders Club students!
